Next you enter the person's names and why you are checking. Directorships are released only if the names match; otherwise you are refunded in full.

  2. Pay R299 by card

Sign in or create a free account, confirm your email and pay securely with Stripe.
  3. Get the PDF by email

If the names match the record, we email a PDF of the person's directorships within minutes. No match? You are refunded in full.

What the report shows

Directorships from the CIPC register, as recorded when you run the check.

  • Every current and previous directorship CIPC links to the ID number
  • Company name, registration number and company status
  • The person's role, such as director or member, and their director status
  • Appointment and resignation dates, where CIPC holds them
  • The purpose you gave and the time of the check, for your audit file

What it does not show

The person's address, phone number, email, employer, credit and property information are left out on purpose, even though our provider returns some of them. Nothing is released unless the names you enter match the record.

Director search questions

How do I check if someone is a director of a company in South Africa?

Enter the person's South African ID number and their names on this page. CheckID searches CIPC director records through our verification provider and, if the names you entered match the record, emails you a PDF of every directorship linked to that ID number. It costs R299 per check.

Why do I need the person's names as well as the ID number?

To protect the person being checked. Directorships are released only when the names you supply match the record for that ID number, so the check cannot be used to look up strangers from an ID number alone. If the names do not match, you learn nothing from the record and you are refunded in full.

What does the report show?

For each company, the report shows the company name, registration number and status, the person's role and director status, and the appointment and resignation dates where CIPC holds them. It does not include the person's address, phone number, employer, credit or property information.

What if the person is not a director anywhere?

If the names match but CIPC links no directorships to the ID number, the PDF says so. That is a result in itself, for example when someone claims to run a company.

Is this an official CIPC document?

No. It is a CheckID summary of the CIPC director records at the time of the check, obtained through our verification provider VerifyNow. It is not a CIPC-certified document, a credit assessment or proof that a person may act for a company.

Do I need the person's consent?

You need a lawful reason under POPIA, such as due diligence on a supplier or customer, screening a prospective director or employee, or preventing fraud. You choose your reason before you pay, and it is kept with your order. Directorships are public-register information, but use the report only for the purpose you gave.

Do you keep the report?

No. The directorships are held in memory only while the PDF is built and emailed, and CheckID cannot send it again, so save it. The ID number and names are removed from the order when the check finishes. We keep an audit record of your order: your name and email, a masked ID, the purpose you chose, the time, the price, payment references and the consent you gave.

Why is there a limit on checks?

Each check costs us a fee from our provider, and limits stop the check being used to guess names. The same ID number can be checked a few times a day, and each account has a daily limit.
