What the report shows

Company-level details from the CIPC register, as recorded when you run the check.

  • Company name and registration number
  • Company type, such as private company or close corporation
  • Registration status, such as in business or deregistered
  • Registration and business start dates
  • Financial year end and business activity, where CIPC holds them

What it does not show

Directors, addresses and contact details are left out on purpose. The PDF is a CheckID summary of the record at the time of the check, not a CIPC-certified document, a credit report or proof that the person you are dealing with may act for the company.

When to check a company

A quick look at the register before you pay, sign or extend credit.

Suppliers and contractors

Confirm they exist before you pay

Check that the supplier or contractor on your quote is a registered company, and whether it is still in business, before you pay a deposit.

Customers and counterparties

Know who you are contracting with

Match the company name and registration number on a contract or application to the CIPC record before you extend credit or terms.

Landlords and agents

Verify a company tenant or landlord

When the party on a lease is a company, confirm its name, registration number and status instead of relying on a letterhead.

Compliance and onboarding

Keep a record of the check

Keep the dated PDF with your onboarding file. It records what the CIPC register held at the time and the reference of the check.

Company check questions

What do I need to run a company check?

The company's registration number, in the form 2007/013732/07: the year it was registered, a six-digit number and a two-digit type code. You find it on the registration certificate, invoices, quotes and contracts. Older close corporation numbers written as CK2003/012345/23 also work.

What does the report show?

The report shows the company name, registration number, type, status, registration and business start dates, and the financial year end and business activity where CIPC holds them. It does not include directors, addresses or contact details.

Is this an official CIPC document?

No. It is a CheckID summary of the CIPC record at the time of the check, obtained through our verification provider VerifyNow. It is not a CIPC-certified copy or a credit assessment. Use the CIPC for certified documents.

What if the company is not found?

You are refunded in full. If the number is mistyped or the company is not on the register, we email you to say so and refund the payment to your card. A refund can take a few business days to reach your bank.

How long does it take?

Usually a few minutes. The PDF is emailed to your verified email address as soon as the check completes.

Do you keep the report?

No. The report is held in memory only while the PDF is built and emailed, and CheckID cannot send it again, so save it. We keep an audit record of your order: your name and email, the registration number as shown in My orders, the price, payment references and the consent you gave.

Can I check a director or an individual?

Not with this check. It looks up companies only. For South African ID numbers, see our ID number checker and ID verification.

Why is there a limit on checks?

Each check costs us a fee from our provider. To keep the service sustainable we limit how many times the same company and the same account can be checked in a day.

Check a company before you do business

R299 per check. Refunded in full if the company is not on the register.
