How bank account verification works

  1. Enter the bank details

Type the account number, choose the bank, then add the holder's name and ID or registration number. No branch code needed.
  2. Pay R149 by card

Sign in or create a free account, confirm your email and pay securely with Stripe.
  3. Get the bank's answer

We ask the bank and email you a PDF with a yes or no for each check, usually within minutes.

What the bank tells you

A yes or no from the bank for each check. Nothing else about the account holder is shown.

  • Does the account exist at that bank?
  • Is it open?
  • Does it belong to the ID number, passport number or company registration number you entered?
  • Is it the account type you expected?
  • Can it receive payments, and can it take debit orders?

What it does not show

No balances, transactions or credit information, and nothing about the holder that you did not enter. The PDF is a CheckID summary of the bank's answer at the time of the check, not a bank-stamped confirmation letter.

When to verify a bank account

Any time money is about to move to an account you have not paid before, or an account has changed.

Paying suppliers

Stop invoice fraud

Fraudsters send fake invoices or "we changed banks" emails. Check that the account on the invoice belongs to the supplier's company before you pay.

Payroll and contractors

Pay the right person

Confirm a new employee's or contractor's bank account is in their own name before the first salary run.

Debit orders and refunds

Collect and refund safely

Check that an account is open and accepts debit orders before you load a mandate, or that a refund goes to the customer's own account.

Landlords and agents

Deposits and rent

Before a tenant pays a deposit, or before you refund one, confirm that the account belongs to the person on the lease.

Private sales

Before a big payment

Buying a car or equipment privately? Make sure the seller's account is really theirs before you transfer the money.

Compliance

Keep a record

Keep the dated PDF with your supplier or customer file. It shows what the bank confirmed, when, and the purpose you gave.

Bank account verification questions

What is bank account verification?

It is a check, sometimes called an AVS check, that asks the account holder's bank whether an account exists, is open and belongs to a given ID number, passport number or company registration number. The bank answers yes or no. It does not show balances, transactions or the holder's details.

What do I need?

The account number, the bank, and the account holder's name with their South African ID number (or passport number, if the holder is not South African), or the registered company name with its CIPC registration number. You do not need a branch code: we use the bank's universal branch code. The account type is optional.

Which banks are supported?

Absa, Access Bank, African Bank, Bank Zero, Bidvest Bank, Capitec, Discovery Bank, FNB, GoTyme Bank, Grindrod Bank, Investec, Nedbank, Sasfin Bank, Standard Bank. Capitec Business and Mercantile Bank business accounts use a different, slower check and are not supported yet.

What does the report show?

A yes or no from the bank for each check: the account exists, is open, belongs to the ID, passport or registration number you entered, matches the account type, accepts payments and accepts debit orders. It also repeats the details you entered, the time of the check, the purpose you gave and a reference.

What if the details do not match?

That is still a completed check, so it is not refunded: you get the PDF that says the account did not verify, and which checks failed. Do not pay into the account until you have confirmed the details another way, for example by calling the supplier on a number you already have.

What if the bank cannot be reached?

We keep retrying, usually for about an hour. If the bank still cannot answer, your payment is refunded in full. A refund can take a few business days to reach your card.

Do I need the account holder's permission?

You need a lawful reason under POPIA, such as paying a supplier or setting up a debit order, and you use the result only for that purpose. Many businesses ask for consent in their supplier or customer onboarding form. You choose your purpose when you order, and we keep it on the audit record.

Do you keep the bank details?

No. The account number and the holder's name and ID, passport or registration number are removed from the order as soon as the check finishes. We keep an audit record: your name and email, the bank, the last four digits of the account, salted hashes of the account number and the ID, passport or registration number, the purpose you gave, the result, the price and payment references.

Is the PDF a bank confirmation letter?

No. It is a CheckID summary of the bank's answer at the time of the check, obtained through our verification provider VerifyNow. It is not a bank-stamped letter, a guarantee that future payments will succeed, or proof that the holder agreed to a debit order.

Why is there a limit on checks?

To stop stolen bank details being tested, the same account number and the same ID, passport or registration number can each be checked three times a day, and each account can run ten bank checks a day.

Check the account before the money leaves

R149 per check. The bank answers in minutes, and you are refunded if it cannot.
